Couch to 5K – It’s Your Time!
We’ve all heard it before, “I’d work out if I just had more time.” Did you know that the average American spends two-and-a-half hours each day watching television? Did you also know that if you could take just a fraction of that time back you’d have enough time to train for a 5K race in just a couple of months?
For many, five kilometers (3.1 miles) is the first competitive distance they try. It's their first race T-shirt and their introduction to the world of road racing. 5-K races are fun to run and easy to race. Training and recovery time is relatively short.
For this reason, the 5-K is the most popular racing distance in the United States. If you are a beginner, you can be standing at the starting line of your first 5-K after only a short training schedule. Could this be your time?!
Whether you are a walker or a runner, HealthWorks has an 8-week training schedule to get you ready for a 5K. There are races to be found just about anywhere, but HealthWorks is proud to be a sponsor of the Mount St. Joseph 5k (MSJ 5k), on September 5, 2014. Proceeds from the race will benefit Health and Wellness programming for students on campus. There’s plenty of time to start training whether you want to walk or run. Check out the 8-week training schedules attached. Remember to ease into your 5K training plan gradually. Don't try to do more, even if you feel you can. If, on the other hand, if you find the program too strenuous, just stretch it out. Don't feel pressured to continue faster than you're able. Start by focusing on gradually increasing the time or distance you run/walk.
We hope you can join the HealthWorks staff on September 5 at the MSJ 5k. Time to get off the couch and get those running/walking shoes on!
