Tom Hanks' recent disclosure that he has type 2 diabetes spotlights one of this country's most troubling health dilemmas: a national diabetes epidemic.  But this is an epidemic that can be directly impacted by lifestyle changes.  According to the American Diabetes Association, you don't have to get to an ideal weight to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, you just have to get to a healthier weight, which may be a loss of as little as 12 to 20 pounds.  Additionally, physical activity is important because it improves the body's ability to utilize insulin.  Click here to learn more about Tom Hanks’ diagnosis, diabetes symptoms and its health effects.

“Well, this month I have to admit that I am a little bit discouraged,” said Denita.  “I have been working out with a new Jillian Michaels workout tape.  Her circuit training tape seems the best because I get an all-over body workout (it targets my arms, butt, abs, etc.).  But I still have belly fat!  I didn’t realize that I could do a million crunches and it won’t necessarily get rid of the fat until I started talking to the trainers in my office.  They told me that in order to get rid of the fat, I have to... Each year, HealthWorks provides flu shots to thousands of our clients’ employees.  Some people still have concerns about the shots based on myths that re-circulate each flu season.  For example:

There’s an App for That
If stress has you anxious, tense and worried, consider trying meditation. Spending even a few minutes in meditation can restore your calm and inner peace.  It’s also been linked to health benefits including better sleep patterns and lower blood pressure (read more about benefits here).  Members of the HealthWorks staff like the Gratitude Meditation app for iPhone or Android. Whether you want to try the 30-Day Gratitude Challenge or simply listen to a one-minute meditation, the app is easy and FREE.  Click to learn about the app for Android or iPhone.

Myth: You can take weight off of specific body parts by doing exercises that target those areas.

Truth: This concept is called "spot training" and unfortunately, it doesn’t burn fat. When you lose weight, you are unable to choose the area in which the reduction will occur. Your body predetermines which fat stores it will use. For example, doing sit-ups will strengthen your abs but will not take the fat off of your stomach. Similarly, an activity like running burns fat all over your body, not just your legs. You can, however, compliment a balanced exercise program with a selection of weight training exercises to gradually lose weight and tone the body.
